The Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC): Voices from the Mist
Established in 1993, the Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) is a non-profit rescue, rehabilitation, and breeding facility located deep within Cúc Phương National Park, dedicated exclusively to saving Vietnam’s rare primates from extinction.
Vietnam is a global hotspot for primate biodiversity, but decades of illegal poaching and the wildlife pet trade have pushed many species to the absolute brink. The center provides a secure, natural forested environment for nearly 250 individuals representing 14 species of monkeys, gibbons, and langurs, including the critically endangered Delacour’s Langur and the magnificent Red-shanked Douc Langur.
Semi-wild forest enclosures mirroring natural habitats for rescued primates.
Most primates arrive as young orphans rescued from trafficking networks. Dedicated keepers provide surrogate care and specialized diets, transitioning them into large, netted forest canopies where they leap, forage, and form natural family groups away from the threat of cages.
"The ultimate mission goes beyond lifetime sanctuary care—it serves as a crucial conservation breeding ark to build safety-net populations for future reintroduction into secure wild habitats."
The Turtle Conservation Center (TCC): Ancient Shells Protected
Established in 1998, the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) is a leading facility dedicated entirely to the rescue, emergency triage, and breeding of Vietnam's native tortoises and freshwater turtles. Because Vietnam is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot for turtles, it unfortunately remains a primary target for poachers supplying illegal domestic and international pet, food, and traditional medicine markets.
Confiscated turtles frequently arrive at the center in critical condition, bearing the heavy physical toll of the illegal trade—suffering from severe dehydration, starvation, shell fractures, and debilitating injuries caused by fishing hooks and cruel wire snares.
Shaded mossy pools and natural enclosures providing sanctuary for native freshwater turtles and tortoises.
Housing over 1,000 individuals representing nearly 20 native species, the TCC operates as an essential insurance population. Through expert medical triage, complex shell repairs, and successful captive breeding programs—including for critically endangered species like the Vietnamese Pond Turtle—the center offers a powerful second chance and a pathway toward future wild reintroduction.
